RIESE & MULLER CULTURE DETAILS
The Culture.
Street style meets minimalism.
A modern look and natural riding experience: meet the Culture. Its pastel colour frame with its striking bend in the top tube is guaranteed to immediately grab attention in and around town. Sustainability was a real priority in its frame construction. You’ll also be cruising around the streets in style with its lightweight and efficient Bosch SX motor and 400 Wh battery. Just take the Culture home to charge it – it’s guaranteed to look good there too.
Perfectly shaped and sustainable
Design you won’t forget.
Its design is so appealing, it makes you want to take it right home with you: thanks to its modern pastel colours, minimalist features and slim round tubes. The bend on the top tube and the curved seat strut loop combine to create a striking frame. Its raised headset with curved handlebars provides for excellent comfort – so now you can leisurely cycle around town for hours on the Culture. And do so with a clear conscience: about 50% of the frame is made of recycled aluminium.
Dynamic drive
Part of the concept.
Take your Culture with you as you efficiently go about your day-to-day business. The Bosch 400 Wh battery integrated into the frame underscores its clean look, and is charged directly in the bike. Moreover, the optional additional 250 Wh battery provides even more power: if you’re out for a longer ride, just secure it in the bag on the down tube. The lightweight and quiet Bosch SX motor blends into the frame as seamlessly as the battery. Combining a natural riding experience with the benefits of an e-bike.
Pared down to the essentials
Everything at a glance.
The LED Remote keeps operation simple: use it to select the right riding mode, then just relax and ride your bike. Coloured LEDs clearly present all the key information. And thanks to the SP Connect interface integrated into the stem, you can also use your smartphone and charge it by USB-C. A smartphone case is available separately. The optional Purion 200 display also provides a clean look, as well as information about speed, range and much more.
Urban equipment
Less is more.
It doesn’t take much for successful riding in urban traffic. It just takes the right thing. Functional elements and add-ons fit seamlessly into the bike. The rear light integrated into the mudguard and the reflector on the saddle ensure good visibility in road traffic. An optional carrier lets you transport your work bag or the weekly shop safely from A to B. And a child seat (DIN EN 14344) is easy to install on top. Optional for our suspension kit with suspension fork and suspension seatpost for ultra-smooth riding over kerbstones and bumpy surfaces.
Our vision: the most sustainable E-Bike.
The Culture is the first bike we have developed based on Circular Design principles from the outset. The fact that its frame is largely manufactured from recycled aluminium makes a clear statement: the Culture is the most sustainable E-Bike that we can build today.
Recycled aluminium
Together with Triangle’s, the Portuguese frame manufacturer, and Hydro, our Norwegian aluminium supplier, around 46% of the frame is made of recycled material, as a ratio of components to frame weight – whilst maintaining a consistently high material quality. A 100% recycled aluminium frame is not feasible for two reasons. First, every alloy we use needs to consist of a certain proportion of primary aluminium so as to exhibit standardcompliant material properties. Secondly, we can currently only procure recycled aluminium products that have been manufactured in an extrusion process (see figure above). This needs to be considered while bearing in mind the fact that our approach is currently unique throughout the entire bike industry. In doing so, we are helping to significantly improve environmental and human rights conditions along the supply chain, and also save energy: the production of recycled aluminium requires only 5% of the energy needed to produce primary aluminium.
Powder-coating
We have opted for powder-coating as the finish for our Culture frame. In many respects, this method is more resource-efficient than painting. For instance, 95% of the excess paint powder and water used can be reused.
Components
When selecting add-on components, we rely on suppliers who meet our high quality and sustainability standards and who also manufacture predominantly in Europe. This enables us to prevent CO2 emissions caused by transporting our components on container ships or by air freight.
Superior quality
Quality and durability go hand in hand. We ensure this by conducting extensive tests that even exceed the requirements of the prescribed standard for E-Bikes (EN 15194). We also employ a professional test rider who gives feedback on quality, wear, geometry, ergonomics, riding behaviour and much more directly to our Innovation & Development department.
Timeless design
The design of the Culture is an expression of its understatement. A focus on high-quality, functional components and a conscious decision to avoid complex features results in a minimalist product that is simple to maintain and especially durable.
1 – Circular Design
Circular Design aims to develop products for the longest possible service life, at the end of which they enter a new product life cycle. During the initial development phase of the Culture, we produced sketches that included the characteristic features of the design.
The ultimate in understatement.
Dominik Mahr is Team Lead Design in our Innovation & Development department. As a designer, he was instrumental in the development of the Culture. He talks to us about the development process for the new bike.
What was the concept behind the new Culture?
When it came to the Culture, we consciously opted for a less technical design that is closer to a classic bike. This resulted in a silhouette that was completely new for Riese & Müller. We developed a bike, the timeless, gentle shapes of which combined with a focus on the essentials, and that appeals to people who are looking for a simple, minimalist and yet uniquely special bike. We opted to include fewer features and configuration options, but ensured that everything was done to the highest quality. The bike conveys a certain understatement and minimalism.
Please briefly describe the design process.
The development took around two years. In the early phase, we produced initial sketches in which we worked out the distinctive design features of the bike. But long before that we had started looking at new mobility concepts. Particularly how bikes are ridden around town and the trends that we observed there. In concrete terms, we realised that there is a target group that wants a simple E-Bike that looks just like a normal bike. We also considered and implemented sustainable product design concepts from the outset, including the Circular Design concept, and the use of recycled aluminium. In doing so, we are systematically contributing to our companywide sustainability strategy, and know from surveys that our customers are increasingly attaching value to sustainable products.
What sets the Culture apart?
The Culture is an everyday bike that is extremely relaxing to ride, which you can also use for wonderfully longer rides at the weekend. The battery is permanently fitted on the bike. This has two major advantages: the battery is securely protected from being stolen within the frame. At the same time, it reduces the weight of the bike. The optional Bosch PowerMore 250 Wh range extender also enables the battery performance to be increased by more than 60%. The bike is driven by the new, lightweight Bosch SX motor, which delivers real power. We have also opted for relatively wide tires. They visually blend well with the proportions of the frame, increase riding comfort, and ensure greater safety in urban traffic. The shape of the frame is instantly recognisable. At the same time, the design is functional: the angled top tube of the diamond frame makes it easier to get onto the bike. On the Mixte frame, the angled top tube is ideal for holding and lifting the bike. The curved seat strut is yet another really attractive and characteristic detail of the rear view.
What role do the new blossom, biscuit and denim colours play?
The colours reflect the relaxed character of the bike: they convey emotion, naturalness and lifestyle. The pastel shades blend harmoniously into the surroundings and the rider’s style. Among other things, we were inspired by urban street style in developing the colour strategy and the overall design concept. And, as with all our products, it was important to us to generate visual longevity and timelessness with the Culture as well.
Who is the Culture aimed at?
We are have an urban and sustainably-orientated target group in mind. Of course, the bike is also attractive to anyone looking for a minimalist and high-quality E-Bike. The Culture adheres to the “E-Bike as a bike” approach and is very similar to a traditional bike in terms of its handling and riding experience. We are therefore expanding our product range, and thereby offering an alternative to our more complex bikes. The Culture combines the idea of a trendy, minimalist, carefree E-Bike with Riese & Müller’s riding dynamics and our quality promise to dealers and customers
